Inaugural Pitch Competition Brings New Ideas to the Forefront at AHIMA19

The AHIMA19 Health Data and Information Conference aims to enlighten and empower attendees with several new offerings, from an education track focused on topics in innovation to the inaugural Pitch Competition. The top five semi-finalists will present creative ideas and solutions aimed at improving the connections between people, systems, and ideas to transform health and healthcare on Monday, September 16 from 1:00 – 2:30 p.m. in the Pitch Arena inside the AHIMA19 exhibit hall. Each competitor will share a five-minute PowerPoint presentation followed by a five-minute question and answer session. The panel of judges will select the three prize-winning finalists. The winner will receive $5,000, the first runner-up will receive $2,500, and the second runner-up will receive $1,500.

This year’s semi-finalists are:

  • Drugviu, launched in March 2019, is a population health platform that provides information to minority populations about prescribed medications based on the experiences of others who have taken the medication.
  • Smarter Health, which launched in September 2017, is a digital startup up designed to transform the way people collaborate to improve value-based healthcare.
  • Tapcloud helps patients and their clinicians achieve better outcomes through the use of a remote patient monitoring and engagement platform.
  • Uppstroms uses machine learning analytics to address upstream social risk to promote better outcomes for patients and better health systems.
  • Valhalla Healthcare provides an intake solution using artificial intelligence to automate clinical documentation for healthcare providers.

The semi-finalists were evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Clarity of problem: Ability to clearly articulate the problem, including needs of stakeholders and deficiencies of current solutions
  • Feasibility: Quality, feasibility, and scalability of proposed solution or technology
  • Differentiation: Differentiation of solution within the competitive landscape
  • Team: Capability of participant to develop and execute solution
  • Recognition: Extent to which partnership with AHIMA can advance solution

The competition is hosted in collaboration with MATTER, a health technology incubator based in Chicago. Joe Rizk, MATTER’s vice president of strategic partnerships, says the decision to collaborate on AHIMA’s inaugural pitch competition was easy because both organizations share the same drive to innovate to improve health outcomes. “We wanted to stimulate thinking within AHIMA’s audience as well as nurture startups and give them a stage to present their solutions,” Rizk says. “The startups benefit from getting feedback from individuals working in the field, but we also get to show people what is happening outside the walls of corporate America.” The five judges tasked with evaluating the semi-finalists’ presentations are:

  • Julie A. Dooling, MSHI, RHIA, CHDA, FAHIMA, director, HIM practice excellence, AHIMA
  • Paul B. Felix, MBA, partner at LeapFrogBI
  • Britney Robbins, founder and CEO, The Gray Matter Experience
  • Giovanna Stahl, RHIA, corporate communications specialist
  • Monica Vajani, partnerships director, MATTER

The winner will be announced after all semi-finalists have made their pitch and the panel has convened to review all submissions.
